In Palestine, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung’s youth study from 2022 shows a clear shift among young people away from political engagement and toward religion. Most respondents report little interest in political news and do not view politics as a relevant part of their future. At the same time, they express strong concerns about the job market and their ability to secure suitable employment. Although the overall economic situation has improved for many, a large share of Palestinian youth remain highly insecure in the aftermath of the COVID‑19 pandemic.
The growing religiosity appears to reflect a declining confidence in other institutions, such as the government and international bodies that could mitigate the pervasive economic and political insecurity. This trend suggests that, for many young Palestinians, religion is becoming a primary coping mechanism in a context where formal channels for change are perceived as ineffective.
