Youth Studies

For Syria, the Friedrich‑Ebert‑Stiftung’s 2021/22 youth study surveyed Syrian youth living in Lebanon, because a survey inside Syria could not reasonably be carried out in the expectation to accurately represent young Syrian's experience.

The findings show that Syrian youth in Lebanon are increasingly turning away from formal political engagement and toward religion. Most report little interest in political news and do not consider politics a central part of their future. At the same time, they express deep concern about the labour market and their prospects for decent employment. Although the overall economic situation has improved for many, the aftermath of the COVID‑19 pandemic has left a large share feeling highly insecure. This growing religiosity appears to reflect a declining confidence in state institutions and international bodies, which are perceived as unable to mitigate the pervasive economic and political insecurity.
